Project Summary:

The objectives of the project were: digital preservation of rock art in Central California. Using advanced technologies like photogrammetry and LiDAR, the team created detailed 3D models and immersive virtual experiences to safeguard the cultural heritage of the CA-MRP-402 site.  The project involved the active participation of SSMN, ensuring that indigenous knowledge was integrated into the preservation and interpretation of the site. In the end, it was determined that the project would not be intended for public viewing in order to respect the Tribe's wishes regarding site sensitivity.  Detailed digital models and data were delivered to the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation, empowering them with tools for ongoing cultural preservation and education. The Tribe now has the ability to manage the preservation of the site independently, with a direct connection to the landowner for continued access.

Project Outcomes:

  • 3D models of petroglyphs
  • Recorded interviews with SSMN
  • Interactive video game
