The purpose of this seed grant is to launch exciting new public programs in the humanities and arts that need an infusion of funding to get off the ground. We particularly encourage applications that enhance diversity and equity at UC Merced and/or in the local community.
Requirements: The lead PI must be a Senate faculty member or a Continuing Lecturer; Unit 18 Lecturers may serve as Co-PI with a Senate faculty member or Continuing Lecturer. Teams may include Unit 18 lecturers, graduate students, faculty from other institutions, and/or community members. The project should have a significant emphasis on the humanities or arts (see the below definition of the humanities) and include humanities or arts faculty. Grant recipients will be required to submit a final report within 30 days following the completion of the grant. All expenditures must fall within UC Merced policy; we encourage you to consult with Center staff as you prepare your itemized budget – meetings can be scheduled with staff to review itemized budgets at least two weeks prior to the deadline. Equipment purchases are generally not an allowable expense.
"The term 'humanities' includes, but is not limited to, the study and interpretation of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life."
