Mellon Faculty Fellowships for Public Humanities

Funding is available for two fellowships to UC Merced Senate faculty members who will each spend the summer of 2025 creating a public humanities project on the theme of “our interwoven futures;” the projects are intended to be community-engaged, with a social justice orientation. The project’s focus should be on our region (Merced County) or on how our region may help address global problems. Projects are welcome that extend from engaging Merced County to reach a broader public in the San Joaquin Valley and beyond. The faculty fellows will each mentor a group of 3-4 graduate student fellows who will work alongside them to co-create and co-design this project (graduate fellows will be funded at $7,500 each during the summer to work alongside faculty and community partners). The faculty fellowship will consist of $9,200 in summer salary. We anticipate this project will involve concentrated time on the part of the faculty fellow during the summer as well as initial planning time in the spring.

The overarching theme for these projects is “Our Interwoven Futures.” Sub-themes that are invitational priorities for the fellowships include:

Risk, Durable Justice, and Reconciliation
Transformative Communities of Care and Mutual Aid
Migrations, Diasporas, and the Future of Cultural Revitalization
Designing Responses to Climate Impacts - from Wildfires to Floods

Application Deadline: Nov. 22, 2024
