Maps are powerful tools of inscription. Embedded within them are attributes that help sustain power by allowing o cial mapmakers the ability to circulate information that is in sync with the status quo's authority. Counter-mapping, however, is a method of interacting with power and reclaiming it by rejecting assertions made by o cial state maps. Non-state maps add value to cultural resources and challenge political maps that have narrow propositions. Thus, positioning the counter-map as a tool to work for a community's own set of values and goals, rather than against.
