About the event:
Spanish, Bilingual education, and research have become critical issues in California and the U.S. in general. California’s steadily rising immigration, its ethnic and linguistic diversity, and its socio-political history of minorities make UC Merced (UCM) a unifying site for a symposium on Spanish in the U.S. and Bilingualism. To stimulate research collaborations between faculty across the UC and to engage Merced community involvement on these issues, the Department of Literatures, Languages, and Cultures is organizing a symposium that brings together expert researchers working on the interplay of identity and language, ideologies and representations of language, racial formations in the U.S., and the sociopolitics of language education.
